How long does a tooth extraction take?

How do I know if I should be coming in for a tooth extraction?

If you suffer from a broken tooth, an abscessed tooth, or impacted teeth, you likely need a tooth extraction. Sometimes we can save teeth with a root canal. You will have to come in for a consultation with Dr. Kleinheinz to see which option best suits your needs.

Why is it better to have a root canal than an extraction?

Saving a tooth is always preferable, and a root canal allows you to do just that. If you don’t want a root canal, you can opt for a tooth extraction. An implant is never the same as a natural tooth, and getting a root canal is more affordable and less invasive than an extraction.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for a tooth extraction?

There are a few things we ask patients to do prior to a tooth extraction in Charlotte: Stop taking Omega-3 and Vitamin E supplements and any supplements containing them for 7 days prior to procedure. Refrain from taking NSAIDs and any anticoagulants (aspirin, baby aspirin, Motrin, Advil, etc) 7 days prior to procedure. Abstain from taking steroids or using any Retinol-based products to including those with Vitamin C and A for at least 3 days prior to procedure. Avoid alcohol 3 days prior to the procedure. Begin prophylactic antiviral and/or antibiotic treatment for viral conditions such as Herpes Simplex Virus.

What happens if you discover another issue during my extraction?

If Dr. Kleinheinz notices a separate issue while you are in for a tooth extraction, we will schedule a separate future appointment.

Does it hurt to have a tooth extraction?

No. You shouldn’t feel any pain during the tooth extraction because we administer anesthesia to the gumline where the bad tooth resides. If you should have any pain after the surgery, you can take an NSAID like ibuprofen.

Will I need any downtime after a tooth extraction?

After a tooth extraction in Charlotte, you may notice results immediately because the painful tooth is now gone. However you will likely need 1 to 5 days of recovery time.
