Is Coffee Actually Good for You?

Nothing beats that first sip of coffee in the morning; it is one of life’s simplest pleasures (unless you’re a tea person, and that’s ok!)! I truly enjoy the taste and entire experience of coffee drinking. From fancy lattes to filter coffee, I love it all. But, as a dentist, I wanted to make sure that this tasty habit was not detrimental to my dental and overall health. And even if you’re someone who drinks coffee solely for the caffeine, I hope you’ll find this information interesting and enlightening.

Basically, coffee can be good for you in moderation!!

THREE REASONS TO LOVE COFFEE:

1) CAFFEINE- A recent study has shown an association between caffeine and longevity in patients with oral cancer. Some studies are suggesting that coffee may be preventative against all sorts of diseases such as Parkinson’s, liver cancer, colon cancer, Alzheimer’s, and strokes! With that said, too much caffeine can increase anxiety, blood pressure, and trigger teeth clenching and grinding… so again, everything in moderation!

2) BONE MINERAL DENSITY- 12 metabolites found in coffee have been positively correlated to bone mineral density. In healthy adults these bioactive metabolites can reduce your risk for bone fracture— specifically in your hip and femur.

3) TRIGONELLINE- Trigonelline is an alkaloid material that is found in coffee (Arabica coffee beans have the highest amounts). Recent studies have shown that trigonelline reduces the incidence of dental cavities because it helps prevent the bacteria S. Mutans from sticking to enamel! SO COOL!

COFFEE WARNINGS:

-Many people add sugar, sugary creamers, and syrups to their coffee. In these cases, the negative effects of sugar in the mouth and body outweigh the positive aspects of the coffee.

-Coffee is acidic. Acid can cause enamel erosion. So again, everything in moderation.

Research is ongoing, but so far it appears that there are many reasons to savor your morning coffee!
